Calculating the return on investment for a robot requires comparing your current labor costs against the total cost of robot ownership. Start by determining your fully loaded labor cost: hourly wage multiplied by hours worked, adjusted for benefits (typically 1.3-1.4x base wage in the US).
Next, calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for the robot. This goes beyond purchase price to include integration and installation (typically 20-80% of the robot price), annual maintenance (8-15%), software licensing, energy costs, and training. For humanoid robots, expect a TCO multiplier of 1.36-1.42x the purchase price over 3 years.
The ROI formula is: ROI% = ((Cumulative Labor Savings - Total Robot Investment) / Total Robot Investment) x 100. The payback period tells you how many months until the robot has saved more than it cost. Collaborative robots (cobots) typically achieve payback in 12-24 months, while humanoid robots may take 18-36 months depending on deployment scale.
The humanoid robotics market is evolving rapidly. As of March 2026, prices range from the Unitree G1 at $13,500 for basic research models to specialized platforms like the Boston Dynamics Atlas at an estimated $130,000-$150,000. Tesla's Optimus has a stated target price of $20,000-$30,000 but is not yet commercially available (2027 target). Figure 02 is available only through a Robot-as-a-Service model at approximately $1,000/month.
For businesses ready to deploy today, collaborative robots from Universal Robots ($23,000-$85,000) and industrial robots from FANUC, ABB, and KUKA offer proven reliability with well-documented maintenance histories and 8-15 year lifespans.
